Which oil is right for me?

Choosing the right oils for your skin based on lipid profiles involves understanding your skin type, concerns, and the specific fatty acid composition of different oils. Here's a general guide to help you select oils based on their lipid profiles:

  1. Carrier oils are very rich in lipids (up to 99%) which correspond to the fat content of living beings.  Our skin is a protective shield made of sebum (full of lipids itself), sweat and water.  It perfectly matches with these natural oils that help moisturize, nourish, preserve and beautify it. So therefore understanding fatty acids is therefore necessary to choose the most fitting carrier oils according to one's skin type and needs.  How do we do that?

  2. Identify Your Skin Type:

    • Dry Skin: People with dry skin tend to have flaky and dry patches on their skin. Dry skin has lower levels of oleic acid. Instead, they should use humectants like aloe vera and hyaluronic acid, as well as oils rich in oleic acid to help retain moisture on their skin.Look for oils rich in oleic acid (omega-9 fatty acid)  to intensely moisturise, protect, soften and soothe in order to restore the hydrolipidic film and prevent the skin from drying out. They are usually rich and very hydrating and penetrate deep into the skin.
    • They include oils like Avocado, Coconut, Macadamia, Sweet Almond, Olive Oil, Argan Oil, and Almond Oil

    • Normal Skin:  Select protective and softening oils (omegas-6 and 9) to preserve and maintain the skin in good condition.
Recommended: The Apricot Seed, Jojoba or Macadamia Oils

    • Oily or Acne-Prone Skin:  Contrary to what is usually thought, such skins need to be moisturized and nourished just as much. People with oily skin produce an excessive amount of oleic acid and less linoleic acid.  Opt for oils higher in linoleic acid, as they are lighter and less likely to clog pores. They can help balance oil production and reduce acne.
    • Examples include Apricot Seed, Jojoba, Macadamia, Safflower Oil, Rosehip Oil, Hemp Seed Oil, Evening Primrose Oil and Grape Seed Oil

    • Mature skin: People with mature skin, often presents with dry skin, fine lines and wrinkles. Oils that penetrate deep into the skin and hydrates the skin is ideal for this skin type. As well as, oils that contain high amounts of antioxidants that protect the skin from UV damage, which prevents collagen breakdown is ideal for this skin type.  Focus on oils with softening, firming, moisturizing and regenerating virtues in order to avoid skin slackening.
Recommended: The Argan, Camellia Seed, Rosehip or Sea Buckthorn oils

  3. Remember, individual skin reactions can vary, so it's crucial to test new oils cautiously, especially if you have sensitive or reactive skin. Gradually introduce oils into your skincare routine and observe how your skin responds over time before incorporating them regularly.

You could always consulting with a skincare professional who also provide valuable guidance on selecting oils tailored to your skin's needs and concerns.
